My father grew up in Perth Amboy and watched this church being built. When he married, he moved to Woodbridge where he raised my sister and I. Although we attended regular mass in St James, we always went back to St Stephens to get out food blessed for Easter and the Oplatik for Christmas. I loved Easter especially - all the beautiful baskets linrd up on the railing in the chirch. After the blessing of the food, there was a life sized Jesus on the cross laying on the floor in the front of the aisle. It was propped up on the step and peopke would start on their knees from the back of the church until reaching the cross and kissing Jesus' wounds. They would then go to the side where a large tomb and another life sized Jesus lay surrounded by flowers. It was beautiful! We then were able to go to confession. I enjoyed thid church and experience so much that now., years later, I still travel back from Atlantic Highlands for the holidays and bring my family. It's a little different - the blessing of food is in the school and the statues are much smaller. The people kissing Jesus in the aisle start only a pew or so away, but I still love it and will continue to go back as long as I can.
